Scientists claim that it’s a real breakthrough in the anti-aging research world because it could be the key to living a longer and better life.
In this article, you will discover this new molecule called NMN that also stands for Nicotinamide MonoNucleotide, its benefits, as well as the dosage and side effects.
WHAT IS NMN?
Nicotinamide Mononucleotide or NMN, is a derivative of Niacin, a form of vitamin B3.
The important thing to remember first is that NMN is a NAD+ precursor: it means that NMN supplements are designed to help boost your body’s NAD+ levels.
WHAT IS NAD+
NAD+ is an essential coenzyme in the human body. It plays a crucial role in various biological functions, including metabolism, aging, cell death, DNA repair, and gene expression.
Thus, NAD+ is critical for our overall health!
WHY BOOSTING YOUR NAD+ LEVELS IS CRUCIAL TO FIGHT AGING?
NAD+ coenzyme declines dramatically as we age, and this is the problem.
Indeed, scientists demonstrated that this NAD+ decline is a major contributor to aging.
And even more than that, they think that lower NAD+ levels could lead to age-related conditions like neurodegenerative diseases, heart disease, and cancer.
It’s why famous scientists, such as Doctor Sinclair from Harvard University, claim that boosting your NAD+ levels could be the key to dramatically slow down aging and fight off age related diseases.
HOW DOES NAD+ WORK IN THE BODY TO SLOW DOWN AGING?
According to the current aging theory, the accumulation of damage in our DNA is the main cause of aging. This DNA damage can be due to environmental factors such as radiation, pollution, or simply to random error in DNA replication.
It’s important to understand that DNA damage occurs all the time during your life, but fortunately, we have a really efficient repair mechanism in our cells involving enzymes called Sirtuins.
Those Sirtuins are crucial when it comes to aging. They are able to fix the DNA damage occurring in your cells, and therefore prevent many diseases. Sirtuins are basically the guardian of your genome. They keep your DNA safe and protect it.
And here is the link between NAD+ and Sirtuins: like a car cannot drive without fuel, Sirtuins’ activation requires NAD+.
- Researchers showed that raising NAD+ levels activates Sirtuins and therefore increases the lifespans of mice. They were able to live longer!
- Studies also show that raising NAD+ levels in the body could also treat age-related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration and general decline of the immune system.
More studies are ongoing to see how these results can translate to humans, but the results are so far really exciting!
So NMN supplements increase NAD+ levels in your body, which in turn activate the Sirtuins that repair and protect your DNA, that eventually slow down aging and protect you from many diseases.
WHAT ABOUT ITS SAFETY?
Scientists have researched NMN extensively.
In 2019, they tested NMN safety in a clinical trial in Japan in which 10 healthy men were given up to 500mg of NMN per day.
During this trial, scientists checked their blood pressure, oxygen saturation, body temperature, and looked for any clinical symptoms.
The good news is that the results showed that everything was perfectly fine for them. So they concluded that NMN is safe, well-tolerated, and no side effects have been reported.
But of course, and as any dietary supplements, we don’t recommend it to kids, and pregnant or breastfeeding women. And if you have any medical indications, always consult your physician before taking anything.
WHAT ABOUT THE DOSAGE?
It’s always difficult to find a clear answer to this question.
But based on scientific results and our customers' feedback, it seems that the best is to take about 400-600 mg daily when you are between 30 to 50, 600-800 mg when you are between 50 to 60, and 800-1000 mg when you are over 60.
Don’t forget that you can also naturally find NMN in foods such as avocado, broccoli, cabbage and tomatoes.
Even if you’d need to eat 1 kilo of broccoli to reach 1 mg of NMN, we always encourage you to eat these healthy foods.
But unfortunately in this case, these healthy foods can not be used alone as a substitute for NMN supplementation if you want to reach an effective dosage.
